Plumbing problems are common and costly, and can easily sneak up on you out of the blue, causing disruptions and issues where you’ve come to expect that everything should always run as it should. The best thing to do is to attack plumbing issues before they become majorly disruptive and expensive plumbing disasters. Below are a few key warning signs to keep an eye out for.

Is Your Sink Draining Slowly?

Is your sink draining slower than usual? Do you find that it is making noise while it drains? If you’ve noticed that it’s taking a long time for your sink to empty, then you are likely dealing with a blocked pipe of some sort. There are drain cleaners available at hardware stores, and there are also gentle solutions dishwashing soap and hot water. Dawn is perhaps the most successful dish soap for this as it is known to cut grease really well. When combined with hot water, generally it can cut through most grease backups. If this does not work, contact a plumber before the situation gets out of hand.

Do You Have Leaky Pipes?

If you’ve ever opened up the cabinet beneath your kitchen or bathroom sink and noticed drips coming from one of the pipes, you’re most likely dealing with a plumbing issue that can get progressively worse if it’s not dealt with right away. A leaky pipe often means that the pipe is rusting, the hold is forming, and water is seeping through. This is a situation to call a well-qualified plumber to replace the rotted section of the pipe. I not taken care of, the situation will continue to worsen, and become increasingly expensive.
Does Your Toilet Keep Backing Up?

Let’s be honest here for a minute, there are few things more outright disgusting than a backed up toilet. A toilet that can’t flush is not only gross, but it can also quickly become a huge heath hazard. Plunging the bowl may take care of the problem temporarily – at least temporarily- however, if the issue keeps happening, the problem is probably deeper in the tank. Depending on what kind of system you are on you may have a septic tank that needs to be emptied, or it might be something else. This is another one of those times that you need to contact a plumber ASAP. A clogged toilet will only become more gross and scentful the longer you delay.
Is Your Faucet Sputtering?
Odds are, you have likely experienced a sputtering faucet at one point or another and have likely – while finding it mildly annoying – brushed it off without giving it too much thought. While that is fine if the sputtering faucet is not a regular occurrence, if it is, it could mean there’s a cracked water pipe somewhere in the building’s plumbing system or the main water line. While you might not be a fan of calling a plumber over what seems like a simple faucet leak, the problem, if not taken care of will likely grow increasingly worse, and more expensive.
