When it comes to home maintenance there are some things that ought to be done during specific times of the year.  January is a time of new beginning and resolutions, making it in a lot of ways the ideal time to start the year off on the right foot in terms of home maintenance. Here are 3 important things to check off your January to-do list to start the new year off right.

Get Organized
Whether you work from home or are trying to ensure that all of your bills and receipts are in order for tax-time, January is the perfect time to get your paperwork organized and up-to-date.  Although most paperwork is now maintained digitally, it is critical to making sure you’re organized and backed up. As daunting as this might seem, it does not have to take that long, just some focus and a determination to complete it. Take a day or an afternoon and sort through online statements, contacts and emails that inevitably accumulated over the holidays and (throughout the year in some cases). Once done, do yourself a favor and backup to a hard drive or cloud service – just to be on the safe side.

Remember that organization does not have to only apply to your finances and paperwork. This can be a great time to organize and rearrange other aspects of your house too!

Get Rid of Junk
Throughout the year it is easy to loose track of what items expire when (this is especially true when it comes to toiletries), where certain things are thrown, and what clothes your kids have own grown. Take time to sort through your toiletry products, food items in the pantry, junk drawers, and kids closets. Toss anything that is old, expired or outgrown and starts fresh for the new year. Seeing where you stand in terms of these necessary items can save you a lot of money in the long run, making this a great step from those aiming to become more financially stable in the new year.

Get Excited About the New Year
If you are planning on moving or doing any home renovations, now is the time to think about them and make a plan. It is a new year, and the chance to start fresh. Considering moving? Why not start looking online at comparables in your area? While there, why not take a peek at the potential new neighborhood(s) you have in mind? Thinking about a home renovation? Why not look into pricing, and begin a budget or savings goal to help you get there.

Real estate, like any investment, needs to be inspected and reviewed. The new year is a great chance to ensure that your real estate investment is on track to be going on the right track for the new year. This is also a great time to begin any new budgeting goals or renovation goals that you might have in order to see your real estate investment grow and become even more profitable (and comfortable to live in)!
