For a lot of homeowners, especially those with kids, finding adequate storage is a huge factor when looking for a home. And, for those already settled, it is often among one of the most frustrating problems to deal with on a day-to-day basis.

Storage is such a hot-button topic that it is generally among the top necessities on buyers’ wish lists. So much so, that real estate expert Adam Wilson provided us with a list of ways not only to increase the storage throughout your house but of how to make your storage look it’s best:

  • Install floor to ceiling shelving (if possible) in your garage. It doesn’t have to be expensive! Build with 2×4′ s/plywood or buy the plastic modular shelving units.
  • The same would go for your ‘storage room.’ Many people just throw luggage, boxes, bags, and anything else in a room, and then the whole floor is covered. Installing shelving/hooks and things and utilizing the wall space vertically will help.
  • In your closet, instead of the wire shelving that comes with most homes, invest in a closet storage solution that will utilize the wall space better, add drawers and more shelves — companies like Ikea, Home Depot or if you want a little extra check out California Closets.
  • Utilize totes/boxes under your bed if possible and on the top shelf in closets.
  • Behind doors, if enough space you could add shelving or just use the back of a door for hanging sweaters/towels etc.

So, here are some easy tips that will help you to find extra space and make the most of every room in your home.

The Pantry

Create room in your pantry by getting rid of any oversized and awkward food packaging. Instead, purchase clear, air-tight containers and label with either chalk or whiteboard markers. Make a note of not only the product name but also the nutritional facts, and expiration date.

If, like many, you like to buy in bulk, but the bulk of your paper goods in another location. Then, restock as needed.

The Kitchen

Pots and pans can be a pain to store if you don’t have a large kitchen. If this is the case for you, then consider storing pots, pans, and other durable items, on their sides like files. This simple step will not only create more room, but it will also make it easy for you to see precisely what you have and what you need.

Baby’s Closet

Ask yourself one question, is there room to add another bar? Although this won’t be a permanent solution, for the time being, why not take advantage of the fact that baby clothing is smaller and if you can, add an additional bar. This will allow you to hang the clothing to maximize space. You can even buy premade closet organizers that you can customize in order to make the most out of the baby’s closet.

Remember, the trick to creating more space in your home is to get rid of things that you don’t need anymore. If you find you have extra things around that you aren’t using, maybe throw pillows, blankets, frames, dishes, clothes – whatever you have – consider inviting friends over and throwing a reverse housewarming party! What is the opposite of a housewarming party you ask? Well, instead of having your friends bring a housewarming gift, they take something home with them! Try it today! Happy de cluttering!
