Over the last few years, Seattle and Portland have in many ways become known as being “the place to be” if you are young and starting out. These, along with continued favorites like Los Angeles and New York are hot spots for young professionals that are starting out. However, due to the continuous increasing competition for jobs, and a major rise in living expenses, for many young professionals the appeal of these locations is slowly starting to fade in some ways.  So what is it about these cities and others like them, that keep drawing millennials in?

Accessibility
One thing that most major cities have in common, especially those with such a high percentage of young people starting out, is walk ability or an ease of accessibility. This means that residents are able to find what they need without having to drive a long time to get there. In cities like New York and LA not only is there a strong public transit system to assist, but there are many districts that can make shopping even easier. Additionally, major cities like these and Portland are easily accessible via major highways and interstates.

Entertainment
Millennials love to be entertained. All of the cities discussed on this list offer a wide variety of entertainment options, regardless of what your interests are. This can be a fantastic asset for more than just the obvious reason. A lot of the time when starting out, people will work one job while trying to break into another industry. Whether you are hoping to become a screenwriter, a comedian, novelist, playwright, musician or professional photographer having outlets to perform in, read, meet with like-minded people and network is a major benefit for cities and communities such as these.

Transportation
The public transportation in throughout the areas that we have been talking about is a major factor. It is also a factor that seems to be constantly evolving with public transit becoming easier than ever to access and travel by. Cities like Seattle and New York are home to transit options like buses, subways, taxis, ubers, trains and airports. This makes travel both near and far immensely easier for residents.

Jobs
Perhaps one of, if not the most important reason why so many young people and professionals are deciding to move to these areas is the abundance of jobs in all sorts of fields. Although the job competition is tough, the resources and opportunities that are offered in communities like New York and Seattle are hard to compete with. A great example of this is Silicon Valley in California. No one that is hoping to create or work at a tech startup is going to rule out moving to the heart of the tech-start up industry simply because of competition. They know that where there is competition, there is also reward.

Although it is not always easy to continuously push through a crowd of your peers, while trying to find your spot in your field, knowing what to look for when finding a city to settle down in will help. Finding a location that provides for you both on a financial and career level, as well as a personal one will make finding your place a whole lot easier.
